Reducing amount of electricity used by families is an important issue when electricity power is limited due to the disaster in the nuclear power plant.
However, we miss some spice of luxury, good design and touch of art in our daily life, while keeping the amount of electricity used at low level.
This INDEX award finalist nominated light bulb has beautiful shapes and what is more, uses 80% less energy and lasts about 8 times longer compared to traditional incandescent light bulb.

The Plumen fits into any standard bulb fitting. With its gorgeous shape, it makes users want to show the light bulb that used to be hidden under the cover.

Not only it is INDEX finalist nominee, it is also nominated for 2011 Product Design of the Year and overall Design of the Year by the Design Museum, London, and received the overall award for the Brit Insurance Designs of the Year 2011.

The designer, Samuel Wilkinson wondered why there are only few shape variations of light bulbs although it is what we see and use everyday in our life. It lacked in imagination, he thought, and designed this so that people have choices of light bulbs, from not only a sustainability perspective, but also from an “aesthetic” perspective.

“The Plumen 001 is the world’s first designer energy saving light bulb.

The energy saving light bulb is a neglected, yet inspiring invention. It uses 80% less energy than the traditional incandescent light bulb, keeps down electricity bills and is better for the environment. It also lasts around 8 times longer.

Despite this, we tend to buy them out of moral obligation. To some the problem is the light they give off, to others it is the way they look. Both can be solved. We believe the answer is in the design.

Make the bulb attractive and people will spend a bit more and enjoy a better quality of light and a design they appreciate every day. Glass tubes can be bent is many different shapes so why are there thousands of manufacturers but only three designs? Plumen aims to address the problem.

The name comes from ‘plume’ ? a bird’s show feather, designed to attract attention to a bird’s prowess and beauty. We believe our designs do the same for the energy saving light bulb.”
